File Services
Adding the File Services role has many services. File server adds the Share and Storage Management console where you can manage shared folders, disk partitions volumes, and drive letters assigned to volumes.
DFS allows you to store the copies of shared folders on multiple servers.FSRM, NFS and windows search are few other services available. DFS components include Namespace, namespace server, namespace root, Folder. DFS replication can be used to place multiple copies of a shared folder on different server which are updated and synchronized using RDC protocol.
The file system and the NFS system allows us the flexibility to grant access as per the roles. The following are the roles available.
Full Control. Lets the security principal perform all actions to the object, including changing permissions and taking ownership of the object.
Modify. Same as Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, and Write permissions plus lets the security principal delete the object.
Read & Execute. Same as the Read permission plus lets the security principal traverse folders and execute files.
List Folder Contents. (Folders Only) Same as the Read & Execute permission, but the permission is only inherited by folders.
Read. Lets the security principal read the object's data and other attributes, including listing a folder's contents.
Write. Lets the security principal change the object's data and other attributes, including creating files and folders within a folder.
In additional to copying and storing files, it has a feature to store the cache content in remote locations through BranchCache. Branch cache resolves issues related to main office and branch offices connection, low bandwidth and unreliable WAN link and data corruption.
